Compulsory Purchase Order 2020

Snowdonia Visual Impact Provision Project plans to remove approximately 3.5 kilometres of the existing electricity line and pylons which span the Dwyryd Estuary between our existing compound at Garth, Minffordd, to an area of land north of Cilfor.

The removal of the overhead line presents a major opportunity to conserve and enhance the natural beauty and environmental heritage of an important part of the precious landscape of Snowdonia National Park.

This work will make use of a funding provision that Ofgem have made available to reduce the visual impact of pre-existing infrastructure in nationally designated areas. These funds have been made available by Ofgem in response to requests from stakeholders and feedback received from the public to remove existing overhead electricity lines in valued places such as National Parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Following detailed evaluation, an independent panel comprising 15 stakeholder groups identified four locations which it considered would benefit most in landscape terms from the removal of overhead lines. This 3.5 kilometre section of existing overhead line is one of the four prioritised locations.

Stakeholders have agreed that the best way to achieve the intended landscape enhancements in this part of Snowdonia is to construct a tunnel deep under the Dwyryd Estuary to house a new set of electricity cables and, once complete, to remove the section of existing overhead line.

To ensure that the works can be completed within the timescales required under the scheme, we need to acquire the necessary land and rights for constructing the new tunnel and its associated infrastructure, and also to ensure that we have all the land and rights we would need to remove the existing line.

As part of this, we made a compulsory purchase order (the Order) on 15 June 2020.

Below you’ll find a number of documents related to the Order below. Those who have land interests in the project area have been contacted directly. If you have any questions please contact the team.
