The Landscape Enhancement Initiative (LEI) forms an important part of National Grid’s Visual Impact Provision (VIP) project, which uses part of an allowance of £500 million made available by Ofgem for transmission operators in Great Britain to carry out work to reduce the landscape and visual impact of existing electricity infrastructure in protected landscapes.

Available until 2021, the LEI will provide grants over a five-year period to help fund local enhancement schemes that reduce the landscape and visual impacts of existing National Grid electricity transmission lines across English and Welsh AONBs and National Parks.

Potential projects could include localised tree planting; enhancing and managing hedgerows; diverting trails, footpaths, cycleways and riding routes; or rebuilding dry stone walls.

The next application window opens in autumn 2016.
